I know this seems like a relatively obscure topic to discuss, but I’ve been playing a lot of games recently where it feels like there’s a cutscene every two seconds and I never actually get to engage in the gameplay as much as I would like to. Feels like I’m watching a movie rather than playing a video game sometimes.
I understand that expressing the story of the game is important but many earlier games were able to express this by just showing a beginning cutscene. If there were any other cutscenes, they would be short, straight to the point and would only detail important parts of the game.
Pre-rendered cutscenes are something that annoys me even more. If you’re an indie developer, it’s fine. But if you’re Mr. Godd Howard making the new Elder Scrolls with all the money and developers in the world, it feels like pure laziness seeing these pre-rendered cutscenes in these games.
However, as I very badly and briefly stated earlier, I’m fine with some cutscenes. If there’s a starting cutscene and maybe just a few more short ones scattered throughout the game that are important to watch because of the story, that’s fine. But when there are cutscenes all the time, it’s just boring. Getting excited to play the game but then you go up to someone to experience a pointless cutscene that could’ve been expressed through the use of text boxes.

Screw cutscenes in action games.
In RPGs, they’re acceptable. An RPG is trying to tell you a story, so it’s fair enough that it has cutscenes. Action-type games don’t have an excuse IMO.January 28, 2020 at 12:37 pm #20230It depends on the game. Sometimes the cutscenes are fine and make the videogame better but in others they are just a waste of time. Most of the time I just skip the cutscenes

January 29, 2020 at 5:58 pm #21033Depends on the game, but I mostly skip the cutscenes if I don’t care about the story. Some games have too many convoluted cutscenes I can’t even understand what they are trying to tell so I have to read story explanations online afterwards.
I agree with you that cutscenes should be simple and related to the story.
Witcher 3 had many cutscenes and dialogues even for unimportant side quests, and they just keep talking and talking.
For the Metal Gear Solid series, I enjoyed watching the cutscenes despite the game being mostly cutscenes. They where all related to the main stories and where not a chore to watch.

In the video game Dragon Ball z infinite world for PS2
Which I find fun
The cutscenes are such a big problem for me in this game
Because I feel like they are shortened
Especially the dragon Ball GT cut scenes they feel like they are missing scenes
I like cut scenes to be longer it’s my preference i know
In manhunt 2 I hate that there is very little cutscenes
There should be more
Cut scenes are good that being said sometimes the cutscenes do cool things I wish I could do in the video game there has to be a halfway point of where we get good cutscenes and lots more gameplay
There is sort of interactive cutscenes which I am bad I’m playing at ,either I’m too fast or slow I find those unfair for me unfortunately
Because I can’t do them they are difficult I’m looking at you God of war ps2
