FUNK: 140Rank: Humble Squirrel MonkeySo, there exists this particular project I made a while back (not mentioning any names), which I am currently hosting. The problem with that is, if you’ve seen the news, I’m going to retire soon, meaning I will be unable to continue to host it along with a bunch of other things. The thing is, despite what it seems, I worked for 2 years on this project (had to learn along the way) and I’m not sure I want it to all to go to waste (or a Wikipedia list of “Failed projects”). Now, that leads to my question to you: What should I do with it?
The project itself is not the greatest nor the most popular, however, there are still people who would want to access it and use it themselves. Also, I’ve tried handing the entire thing onto other people, letting them rebrand it, even for free, but I had no success whatsoever.
So, again, what should I do?
- Option A – Get a DVD and put the project on it, then forget the 2 years I spent on it along with the people that downloaded it and put that disc in a pile somewhere never to be seen again until someone does. (the more probable option)
- Option B – Try as much as I can to find someone who would willingly host it, even if they know nothing about how to maintain it just so others can still access it and get it (the harder option)

August 11, 2020 at 4:07 am #35878I’m not sure of any of these are viable options, but here are my thoughts.
If hosting it does not cost you any money, I’d say don’t shut it all down. Just leave it as it is, with a note saying that you will no longer update it/provide any support for it, as well as a means for people to contact you in case they want to take over.
If hosting it costs you money, maybe try to find an alternative, free solution so that the project remains accessible? Again with an email where people can get in touch if they want to host it and continue working on the project themselves.

FUNK: 140Rank: Humble Squirrel MonkeyThanks for the tips! I’ll certainly consider them while checking my options. For my case, the hosting is free, the problem is somewhere else that impedes me from keeping it up for a very long time. Otherwise, and once again, thank you!
August 12, 2020 at 4:18 am #35910What is the problem that doesn’t allow you to keep it up for a long time

FUNK: 140Rank: Humble Squirrel MonkeyThe problem is mostly domain registration, although I have found an alternative
August 13, 2020 at 10:59 am #35949Like maybe show how you went through it like a rewind when you first started it all the way to what it is up right now, how it went up and down, its successful time and unsuccessful times, how it reached to (or almost reached) your dream, something like that…
